How Bones Hold Joint Replacement Implants

joint replacement implants

If you have been advised a joint replacement surgery, you will start wondering as to how your bones would hold the artificial joint in place. You might even be worried as to what chemicals will be used during the course of the surgery and what kind of impact they will have on your body. If you are in Mumbai, you would also want to know as to who is the best joint replacement surgeon in Mumbai.

The process of making the bones hold an artificial joint is referred to as fixation. There are two ways in which implants are fixated or made to stay in place. Doctors may use a press-fit type of implants that enable the bones in your body to make new connections. Alternatively, they may cement the implants in place. Hybrid fixation is also employed in certain situations. This means that one component will be cemented in position and the other will be the press-fit type.

Cementless or press-fit type implants

Press-fit type implants come with a rough surface texture so that the surrounding bone can grow over it. As bones are living tissues, the new joint stimulates the tissues to grow around it. The indentations make the connection strong and secure. The implant is grit blasted to have a dimpled surface or it is porous coated to have a rough surface. The same effect cannot be achieved by using a joint with a smooth surface.

Pros

The biggest advantage of using a press fit type implant is that the bone holds it tightly over time. This reduces the chances of the implant becoming loose.

Cons

A sold bone is required for using press-fit type implants. The implant should fit very well into the bone during the surgery. Therefore, press-fit implants cannot be used if your bone is weak and osteoporotic. Press-fit type implants take time to heal as the bone has to grow around it. Moreover, certain implants, for example, knee joints, need cementing to hold them in position.

Cemented type implants

Cemented implants are fitted tightly on to your bone. The hard substance around the implant forms the cement or glue. Typically, the material used is fast-curing bone cement called polymethyl methacrylate. The hard material acts as grout or filler and holds the implant in position.

Pros

Cemented type implants do not take much time to heal. They will remain solid as soon as they are placed in position. As it is possible to delicately place these implants, they can be used even if you have weak and osteoporotic bones.

Cons

Cemented type implants tend to become loose over time. This is because the cement behaves in a different manner. It is not a living substance like bone tissues. If it begins to become loose, it can become weak over time.
